I had to cutting down a big elm tree in my 1000 last twelvemonth because of Dutch elm illness. I don't take room to cut and stack it, and then the bulk of it went to the transfer station. Just I just couldn't bring myself to office with all of it. The grain is lovely, and the tracks left by the bawl beetles is really visually interesting. I all the same have the tree's trunk sitting in the garage waiting to go cutting into slabs. I honey making simple projects with complimentary wood. Information technology merely takes all the pressure off. The same goes for scraps and offcuts in my woodshop that would otherwise end up in the fireplace. Instead of having a fix plan, the sizes and shapes of pieces of chip or firewood seem to inform you of what they'd like to exist used for. These are some of my near recent projects.
These elm branch coasters were pretty quick to brand – just start slicing! I finished them with an oil/wax mixture to bring out the color and provide a little fleck of protection. You lot don't demand to have down a whole tree to brand these; a problem branch volition work just fine.
This clamper of walnut was likewise captivating to burn, so I turned it into a live-edge shelf. You tin too utilize branches as shelf supports.
I made this walnut sliding lid box from scraps from a trestle tabular array. The client didn't want whatsoever sapwood (the lighter colored wood) in their table. More for me! If you have a bandsaw, making little boxes like these is like shooting fish in a barrel.
This chunky elm deck stool/ottoman lives on my patio. I know it'll eventually autumn apart existence exposed to the elements, but it was quick to brand and we're getting a bunch of use out of it earlier it heads to the fire pile.
This piece of elm really caught my eye – check out the crazy patterns in the wood from bark beetles! Cut it to penholder height, drill some holes in the top, and become back to writing.
